Canaan has secured a new hardware supply deal with Cipher Mining from its U.S.-based manufacturing operations, marking a strategic pivot amid global trade uncertainty.

The Nasdaq-listed mining hardware manufacturer said Thursday that it will deliver approximately 6,840 Avalon A15Pro units to Cipher’s Black Pearl facility in the third quarter of 2025. The order will be fulfilled by both Canaan’s U.S. and Malaysian facilities, with an emphasis on its recently activated domestic production capacity.

The agreement comes as Canaan adjusts its logistics and manufacturing strategy in response to looming U.S. tariffs on China- and Malaysia-origin computing devices. In a May production update, Canaan acknowledged a 10% tariff hike on its Malaysia-made miners.

The deal with Cipher is Canaan’s first major shipment supported by U.S.-based production, underscoring an effort to localize supply amid increasing geopolitical and trade risks. The company framed the move as part of a broader shift in the procurement strategies of its clients, many of whom are prioritizing reliability and speed of deployment as Bitcoin prices reach new highs.

Canaan’s expansion into U.S. manufacturing reflects a broader industry trend among major Chinese Bitcoin mining hardware makers, which began building out domestic production capacity in late 2024.

In December, Bitmain—the largest manufacturer of Bitcoin ASIC miners—disclosed plans to set up a U.S.-based assembly line to counter tariff risks and support American clients. The shift underscores the growing pressure on Chinese suppliers to localize operations for key markets amid escalating trade frictions.

Texas-based Cipher Mining exercised a previously announced option from June 2024 to purchase the A15 Pro miners. Each machine delivers an average hashrate of 221 TH/s with an efficiency of roughly 16.6 J/TH. The new hardware is expected to boost the capacity at Cipher’s Black Pearl site by 1.5 EH/s.
