Marathon Shifts 1.6 EH/s Bitcoin Hashrate to Immersion Amid Noise Complaints

Bought 1,588 BTC in July with $100 million

Marathon has begun transitioning parts of its bitcoin hashrate in Granbury, Texas, to immersion cooling in response to recent noise complaints from local residents that garnered mainstream media attention.

According to its July update, Marathon reduced its energized hashrate at the Granbury site from 4.3 EH/s in June to 2.7 EH/s, implying the shutdown of about 15,000 bitcoin ASIC miners.

“Domestically, we have begun deploying our own technology to improve the operations of our sites. We are transitioning a large portion of our Granbury site from air-cooled to MARA’s immersion containers,” the firm stated.

Marathon expects the first batch of 18 immersion containers to come online in August, with the rest completed by year’s end. Immersion cooling involves submerging mining hardware in a specialized liquid coolant, reducing noise and improving cooling efficiency and hardware longevity.

TIME magazine recently featured the noise complaints filed by local residents against Marathon’s Granbury operation due to the air-cooling fans. Shortly after, Marathon’s site manager at Granbury was found not liable for the alleged noise violation.

Despite the hashrate reduction in Granbury, Marathon increased its total realized hashrate to 28.17 EH/s after mining 692 BTC last month.

Marathon also increased its bitcoin reserve to 20,818 BTC as of July 31, confirming the purchase of 1,588 BTC last month with $100 million as part of its bitcoin hodl treasury strategy.
