EIA to Host Bitcoin Mining Webinar on Energy Consumption

Scheduled for July 10, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is hosting a webinar on Wednesday titled “Understanding Energy-Related Information Associated with U.S. Cryptocurrency Mining Operations.”

The agency, part of the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for collecting, analyzing, and distributing energy-related data, said the webinar would discuss several topics including identifying geographic areas of high growth and quantifying the electricity sources used to meet crypto mining demand.

The webinar is scheduled for Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET. Interested parties can register on the EIA’s website and submit questions in advance.

Earlier this year, the EIA attempted to gather operational statistics on bitcoin mining companies in the U.S. through a “compulsory” survey.

The move drew immediate backlash from the industry, leading Riot and the Texas Blockchain Council to file a lawsuit. The court issued a preliminary injunction, prompting the EIA to suspend the surveys and sequester the data collected.
