Hut 8 to Host 15 EH/s for Bitmain with Its New Bitcoin Miner U3S21EXPH

Bitmain officially released U3S21EXPH weeks after rumors emerged on social media

Bitcoin mining and colocation provider Hut 8 has announced a hosting agreement with Bitmain to host 15 EH/s of Bitmain’s latest model, the U3S21EXPH.

Hut 8 revealed on Thursday that it plans to deploy the model for Bitmain in Q2 2025, which marks the latest proprietary mining move by the miner manufacturing giant.

Also on Thursday, Bitmain officially announced the U3S21EXPH model during the Token 2049 event, touting it as the first Bitmain ASIC miner to feature “direct liquid-to-chip cooling within a U form factor.”

Bitmain’s announcement follows weeks of rumors about the product’s specifications, which include a hashrate capacity of 860 TH/s and a power efficiency of 13 J/TH.

Although this power efficiency is not a significant improvement over Bitmain’s Antminer S21XP, the U3S21EXPH boasts the largest bitcoin hashrate capacity among single mining machines. Additionally, it features a design distinct from all previous Antminer models, effectively merging the capabilities of 3.2 units of the Antminer S21XP into one.

The U3S21EXPH comes amidst the consolidation of the mining industry following the bitcoin halving, which calls for better operational efficiency and optimization from both hardware and infrastructure perspectives. With an efficiency of 13 J/TH, a single U3S21EXPH consumes at least 11.2 kilowatts of power, which is designed for institutional and large-scale bitcoin mining setups.

As part of the hosting agreement, Hut 8 has developed a custom infrastructure design to energize the initial 15 EH/s at a density of up to 180 kilowatts per rack, or about 16 units per rack.

Additionally, Hut 8 stated that the agreement offers a “favorable fixed” hosting fee for Bitmain. In return, Hut 8 has the option to purchase all or parts of the hosted U3S21EXPH units within six months after energization.

As of the end of August, Hut 8 had 18.5 EH/s of hashrate under its management, which included 4.7 EH/s of proprietary mining hashrate. The Bitmain hosting agreement is poised to increase Hut 8’s total managed hashrate to over 33.5 EH/s after energization.
