Dormant Bitcoin Addresses Move 250 BTC Mined in January 2009

250 BTC mined through CPUs in Satoshi-era are worth $15 million

Five dormant OG Bitcoin addresses have been reactivated, each moving 50 BTC mined in January 2009, now worth over $15 million in total after more than 15 years of hodl.

On-chain data from Mempool.space reveals that these five Satoshi-era Bitcoin addresses each mined 50 BTC between January 30 and January 31, 2009 (UTC), at block heights 2247, 2401, 2455, 2486, and 2690, respectively.

This was less than a month after Bitcoin’s genesis block was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto on January 3, 2009. At that time, Bitcoin’s difficulty was only 1, compared to roughly 90 trillion today.

The five addresses had remained inactive since January 2009 but initiated transactions to move each of their 50 BTC rewards to different new addresses in five transactions on Friday.

The transactions were confirmed in close succession at blocks 862079, 862082, 862084, 862085, and 862087.

It is unclear who controls the new and old addresses, but the confirmation timeline of the new transactions suggests they may be associated with one individual or a connected group.
